NPA, Medical Trust Fund partner to tackle rising diabetes cases

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund are exploring a strategic partnership aimed at addressing some of Ghana’s pressing public health challenges, particularly the alarming rise in diabetes cases across the country.
The collaboration was discussed when the Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund and her team paid a working visit to the NPA on Thursday, where they were warmly received by the Chief Executive Officer, Mr Godwin Kudzo Tameklo, and members of his management team.
The meeting focused on identifying areas of cooperation that align with the NPA’s broader corporate social responsibility goals in the health sector and the Trust Fund’s mission to expand access to quality healthcare.
During the discussions, Mr Tameklo expressed concern over the growing prevalence of diabetes in Ghana, revealing that the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital alone had recorded over 5,000 new diabetes cases in just the past eight months.
“This is a clear sign of the urgency to act,” he said, warning that if the trend continues, the national health system could face enormous strain in the years ahead.
Mr Tameklo emphasised that combating lifestyle-related diseases such as diabetes requires a collective national effort involving government agencies, health institutions and the private sector.
“We cannot continue to treat this as a hospital issue. It is a public health matter that demands preventive strategies, awareness creation and coordinated action across all sectors,” he noted.
The NPA CEO reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to working closely with the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, disclosing that the Authority would identify a key health project to support, subject to Board approval.
“We are confident about what this collaboration can achieve for the health and wellbeing of our people,” he stated, adding that the NPA sees this as part of its duty to contribute meaningfully to national development beyond its core mandate.
Mr Tameklo also described the partnership as a selfless investment in the nation’s future, calling it a long-term initiative that will continue to impact lives for generations.
