Leadership is about empowering teams, not titles – Business advisor

Business Advisor, Author, Mentor and Life Coach, Mr Stanley Okoh, has underscored that true leadership goes beyond titles, positions or authority.

According to him, great leaders are those who understand and empower their teams to perform at their best, rather than those who merely exercise control or command.

Speaking on ZED FM’s ‘I Have a Story to Tell’ programme on Tuesday, 14 October 2025, Mr Okoh explained that effective leadership is deeply rooted in understanding people, their strengths, weaknesses, aspirations and motivations, and knowing how to align these qualities with organisational goals.

“Leadership is not about bossing people around or showing who is in charge. It is about creating an environment where your team feels trusted, valued and inspired to give their best,” he said.

Mr Okoh emphasised that successful leaders are those who see their teams as partners in progress, not subordinates to be managed.

“When employees feel included and supported, they become more innovative, engaged and productive,” he stated.

According to Mr Okoh, the best leaders are not those who constantly issue instructions but those who listen, mentor and motivate. He explained that leadership effectiveness depends largely on emotional intelligence, empathy and the ability to connect with others on a human level.

He urged business executives and managers to invest in people development through training, mentoring and coaching, noting that human capital is the most valuable asset in any organisation.

“An organisation can have all the technology and resources in the world, but without empowered people, it will struggle to succeed,” Mr Okoh cautioned.

He emphasised that transformational leadership in today’s workplace demands adaptability, collaboration and the courage to delegate responsibilities.

Mr Okoh observed that leaders who empower others tend to build stronger, more resilient teams that can navigate uncertainty and drive long-term success.

“True leaders don’t create followers; they create more leaders. Leadership is about service, humility and enabling others to reach their full potential,” he remarked.

He also encouraged Ghanaian business leaders to cultivate trust, foster inclusion and embrace a culture of empowerment that allows both people and organisations to thrive.
