Cedi@60 celebration to begin October 28

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has announced 28 October 2025 as the new date to commence the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Ghana cedi.
Originally scheduled for August, the event was postponed following the tragic helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region that claimed eight lives.
In a statement, the central bank said the Cedi@60 celebration will begin with a national launch ceremony at the Accra International Conference Centre, with President John Dramani Mahama expected to grace the occasion as the Special Guest of Honour.
The year-long celebration will include a Cedi Van Regional Roadshow, exhibitions, educational programmes and public outreach campaigns aimed at promoting clean note handling and deepening public understanding of the currency’s security features and history.
The BoG will host an international currency conference, bringing together stakeholders from central banks across the world, academia and the private sector to discuss the evolution of national currencies and the role of the cedi in Ghana’s economic development.
“The Cedi@60 anniversary presents a strategic opportunity to reflect on six decades of monetary sovereignty, engage the public on the history and future of the currency, and promote pride in Ghana’s financial and cultural identity,” the statement noted.
“It is also an occasion to strengthen policy literacy, promote the Bank’s Clean Note Campaign, and inspire the next generation to appreciate and protect the integrity of the cedi,” it added.
According to the BoG, the anniversary celebration will not only highlight the cedi’s historical significance but also underscore its role as a symbol of national identity, stability and progress.
Ghana officially adopted the cedi on 19 July 1965, marking a historic transition from the British West African pound and symbolising the nation’s economic independence.
Over the past six decades, the cedi has undergone several reforms, including redenomination, redesigns and policy shifts, reflecting the country’s economic journey and resilience.
