GSE rises on energy, consumer goods gains despite low trading

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) closed higher on Wednesday, buoyed by strong gains in energy and consumer goods stocks, even as overall trading volume fell sharply from the previous session.
The GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) rose by 40.51 points to close at 8,484.39, while the GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) edged up by 3.45 points to 3,931.17, extending the market’s robust year-to-date performance.
Despite the upward momentum, market activity slowed considerably. Total traded volume fell to 1.52 million shares worth GHS19.21 million, compared to 9.9 million shares valued at GHS46.06 million on Tuesday. On Monday, 3.16 million shares had changed hands for GHS39.19 million.
Nevertheless, market capitalisation increased to GHS166.73 billion, up from GHS166.25 billion the previous day, reflecting investors’ sustained confidence in key blue-chip stocks.
Energy and Consumer Goods Stocks Lead Gains
The day’s rally was driven primarily by advances in TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana, Fan Milk, and Benso Palm Plantation.
TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana surged by GHS3.69 to close at GHS40.65, continuing its strong momentum amid renewed investor interest in the energy sector.
Fan Milk rose by GHS0.54 to GHS5.99, supported by steady consumer demand and optimism surrounding the fast-moving consumer goods segment.
Benso Palm Plantation added GHS0.25 to close at GHS38.06, buoyed by firm commodity prices and expectations of higher profitability.
GCB Bank inched up by GHS0.03 to close at GHS15.18, cementing its position as one of the most actively traded equities on the exchange.
Losers and Trading Activity
On the downside, NewGold slipped by GHS7.72 to GHS482.09, reflecting fluctuations in global gold prices, while Unilever Ghana dropped by GHS0.19 to GHS19.80.
GCB Bank dominated trading, accounting for 1.13 million shares of the total volume, underscoring its continued liquidity and attractiveness to investors. TotalEnergies, despite its sharp price rise, recorded relatively low activity, with only 2,109 shares traded.
