Ghana reaffirms commitment to refugee protection at UN forum
The nation has reiterated its firm commitment to protecting refugees and promoting durable solutions for displaced persons, as the nation continues to play an active role in global humanitarian efforts.
Speaking at the 76th Annual Plenary Session of the Executive Committee of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Geneva, the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, reaffirmed Ghana’s dedication to upholding international refugee protection principles and the ideals of the Global Compact for Refugees (GCR).
He emphasised that Ghana remains steadfast in ensuring that refugees within its borders are treated with dignity and that their basic human rights are protected.
“Ghana continues to work closely with countries of origin and international partners to ensure the effective implementation of durable solutions for refugees, including voluntary repatriation, local integration and resettlement,” the Minister stated.
Highlighting recent progress, Mr Muntaka disclosed that Ghana, in partnership with the UNHCR, is implementing the Ghana Refugee Agribusiness Sustainability Programme (GRASP), a flagship initiative designed to create sustainable livelihood opportunities for both refugees and host communities.
He explained that GRASP is a practical response to the growing need for refugee self-reliance, aiming to empower displaced persons through agriculture and entrepreneurship.
“Through this programme, we are transforming refugee settlements into hubs of economic activity, where both refugees and host communities can work together to achieve shared prosperity,” Mr Muntaka said.
The Minister further revealed that Ghana has also joined hands with neighbouring countries to develop a sub-regional refugee and security strategy. This initiative, he noted, seeks to strengthen national security mechanisms while ensuring that refugee protection standards remain uncompromised across borders.
“Refugee protection must go hand in hand with peace and stability. Our collaboration with neighbouring states ensures that humanitarian and security objectives complement each other for the benefit of all,” Mr Muntaka noted.
He also took the opportunity to commend the outgoing UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Mr Filippo Grandi, for his outstanding leadership and tireless advocacy in advancing the rights and welfare of refugees worldwide.
“Mr Grandi’s tenure has been marked by compassion, innovation and a deep commitment to humanity. His work has inspired many of us to continue standing for those forced to flee,” the Minister added.
