Cabinet retreat to drive AI integration in public service

Ghana is taking a major step toward digital governance as the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations prepares to host a high-level Cabinet retreat aimed at driving the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) across government operations.

The two-day retreat, scheduled for the second week of July 2025, will be led by sector Minister Samuel Nartey George, who announced the initiative during a presentation on Ghana’s AI policy at the Ministry’s conference room. The session featured a presentation by Prof. Jerry John Kponyo, Project Lead of the KNUST Engineering Education Project (KEEP) and a prominent voice in AI and digital innovation in Ghana.

According to the sector Minister, the retreat seeks to explore how AI technologies can be applied to governance and public service delivery, with the broader goal of enhancing efficiency, transparency, and informed decision-making across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

“This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to leveraging technology for improved efficiency, transparency, and decision-making,” the Minister said.

The retreat will bring together Cabinet Ministers and AI experts to:

  • Explore practical AI solutions to enhance public sector operations;
  • Develop strategic plans and roadmaps for integrating AI tools into ministerial workflows;
  • Foster collaboration among ministries to share knowledge, insights, and best practices for AI adoption.

The Minister further emphasized the importance of establishing an Artificial Intelligence Commission to oversee the ethical, strategic, and inclusive development of AI in Ghana.

“As a country, we must not only embrace innovation but also ensure that its deployment is responsible, inclusive, and beneficial to all Ghanaians,” the Minister stated.

He noted that AI has the potential to drive economic transformation, improve service delivery, and elevate the quality of life for citizens—if harnessed correctly.
