GNPC pledges to boost local participation in oil, gas
The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening local participation in the country’s oil and gas sector, pledging to make local content a central pillar of its growth and sustainability strategy.
Chief Executive Officer, Kwame Ntow Amoah, announced this renewed focus at GNPC’s first-ever Vendor Engagement Seminar, held as part of the Corporation’s 40th-anniversary celebrations in Accra.
The event, themed ‘Promoting Local Content and Local Participation through Vendor Engagement,’ brought together local suppliers, vendors and service providers to explore deeper collaboration and inclusion within GNPC’s operations.
Mr Ntow Amoah emphasised that GNPC is undergoing a strategic reset, one that redefines local content as a transformative tool for economic empowerment rather than a regulatory checkbox.
“Local content is not merely a regulatory requirement. It is central to our strategy to grow together with local enterprises in a mutually beneficial partnership, ensuring our nation’s resources create real opportunities for our people, businesses and communities,” he stressed.
The CEO said the Corporation aims to shift from compliance-driven participation to a partnership-driven approach, where local businesses are meaningfully embedded in GNPC’s operations.
He noted that this transformation will be achieved through capacity building, transparent procurement systems and collaborative frameworks designed to strengthen indigenous firms across the petroleum value chain.
As GNPC prepares to expand beyond offshore exploration into inland operations in the Voltaian Basin, Mr Ntow Amoah said this next phase presents a major opportunity to enhance Ghanaian participation.
“Through the work that we are doing offshore, and now as we move into the inland basin, we hope to steadily bring control back to Ghanaians. The opportunities exist in both our offshore fields and the Voltaian Basin, and we expect these to open new spaces for indigenous companies to play an active role,” he noted.
Mr Ntow Amoah added that GNPC’s broader vision is to build a self-sustaining oil and gas ecosystem anchored on local innovation, expertise and ownership.
