Businesses urged to harness music as a strategic tool

Psychologist Robertson David Mfodwo has emphasised the vital role of music in business growth and communication, urging companies to be deliberate in how they use sound to engage customers and employees.
Speaking on Business Breakfast on Zed FM, Mr Mfodwo explained that music is not just entertainment but a powerful tool for communication and marketing.
According to him, no commercial or advertisement can be effective without music, as it draws people’s attention, motivates them and helps deliver messages more effectively.
“Every song attracts attention. It can relax, motivate or direct people to focus on what you want to communicate. That is why businesses often use music in their promotions, because it creates an emotional connection with the audience,” he said.
Mr Mfodwo encouraged businesses to be intentional about the music they play, whether in advertisements, on the streets or even within office spaces.
He suggested that companies should create playlists that not only entertain but also address the emotional needs of their customers and staff.
Mr Mfodwo cautioned that music should be carefully selected to fit the environment.
“You can’t be in a bank and play loud Afrobeat music. A bank requires calming or soothing sounds to keep people relaxed and focused,” he explained.
The psychologist stressed that appropriate music choices can improve customer experience, boost employee morale and enhance overall productivity.
He also encouraged businesses to view music as a strategic resource, not just background noise, capable of shaping perceptions and influencing behaviour.
