A/R: Nine dead in galamsey pit collapse at Kosotie

A mining pit collapse at Kasotie in Atwima Mponua, Ashanti Region, has killed nine and left several others critically injured.

The collapse occurred on Tuesday, 1 October 2025, at approximately 4:30 p.m. when an abandoned pit, previously used for unauthorised mining activities, gave way and trapped between 16 and 20 individuals engaged in galamsey operations.

By Thursday morning, 2 October, emergency teams had recovered nine bodies from the site. Four survivors remain in critical condition and are receiving medical attention.

The Nkawie Divisional Police have conveyed the deceased to the Nyinahini Mortuary for identification and further directives.

Residents are calling for urgent government intervention to reclaim and secure abandoned mining sites to prevent further loss of life.
“This is not just a mining issue. It is a national emergency. We cannot keep burying our youth in pits of greed and neglect,” one resident stated.
