GSE starts week strong as banks, energy stocks rise

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) opened the week on a bullish note, extending the rally that closed last week, with strong performances in the banking, energy and gold segments lifting investor confidence.

Trading on Monday, 29th September 2025, saw key banking counters lead the charge. Ecobank Ghana climbed by GHS1.00 to close at GHS12.00, marking its best performance in weeks.

GCB Bank gained GHS0.07 to end at GHS14.10, while Cal Bank edged up slightly to GHS0.64. The only notable laggard in the sector was Access Bank Ghana, which shed a pesewa to finish at GHS16.34.

Energy stocks also contributed to the positive market tone. TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana advanced GHS1.51 to close at GHS37.00, reflecting sustained interest in oil and energy-related counters.

Meanwhile, the NewGold ETF, which tracks the global price of gold, rose sharply by GHS2.90 to GHS476.90, providing investors with a hedge against market uncertainty.

These movements lifted the market’s key indicators. The GSE Composite Index gained 41.85 points to settle at 8,161.85 points, while the GSE Financial Stocks Index climbed by 39.64 points to 3,790.98. Both indices confirmed broad upward momentum, particularly within financial stocks.

Market activity was robust, with a total of 2.07 million shares changing hands, valued at GHS8.36 million. By the close of trading, market capitalisation had increased to GHS162.35 billion, underscoring the strength of investor demand.

Monday’s rally builds on last week’s performance, when the market resumed after a public holiday on Monday and recorded consistent gains across the remaining four sessions.

Over the week, the Composite Index advanced from 7,800.70 points on Tuesday to 8,120.00 points by Friday, a rise of more than 319 points. Market capitalisation expanded by over GHS4 billion, buoyed by sustained appetite for banking and energy-related stocks.
