EU ambassador vows to make Ghana investment hub

By Praisebell Rosemond Larbi

The European Union (EU) Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Rune Skinnebach, has pledged to focus his tenure on making Ghana a more attractive destination for European investment.

He said his mission is to strengthen economic cooperation, support infrastructure development and advance sustainability while contributing to the country’s broader economic stability.

In an interview on Tuesday, 30th September 2025, Mr Skinnebach explained that the EU’s partnership with Ghana has evolved over the years.

While previously centred largely on promoting values and principles such as democracy, governance and human rights, the relationship now places greater emphasis on shared economic interests.

“Europe used to be a corporate partner promoting its values and principles. Now, this has extended to interests also. Fortunately, many of these interests coincide with Ghana’s interests as well. What I want to do in my four years here is to make Ghana more attractive for investment for Europeans,” he stated.

According to the Ambassador, the EU is keen on mobilising financing from a diverse pool, including private investors, development institutions and international financial organisations, to support Ghana’s growth agenda.

He highlighted that these resources would play a pivotal role in modernising infrastructure, expanding sustainable projects and boosting economic resilience.

“From direct investments for the private sector, development institutions and also for international financial institutions to bring their money to Ghana and to help develop the infrastructure and to help develop sustainability and to help push the economic stabilisation,” Mr Skinnebach said.

The EU has long been one of Ghana’s key development and trade partners, providing support in areas ranging from agriculture and education to governance and infrastructure.

However, the new focus on investment-driven cooperation reflects a broader strategy to align Ghana’s economic potential with Europe’s need for stable, reliable partners on the African continent.

Mr Skinnebach emphasised that deepening EU-Ghana ties would not only create opportunities for European investors but also unlock jobs, innovation and long-term growth for Ghanaians.

He added that with Ghana’s strategic position in West Africa, the country could become a hub for European trade and investment in the region.
