President John Dramani Mahama is set to unveil a landmark international initiative, ‘The Accra Reset: Reimagining Global Governance for Health and Development’, during the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
In his role as the African Union’s Champion for African Financial Institutions, President Mahama will host a high-level event to introduce the initiative, which seeks to overhaul global governance systems and strengthen responses to health and development challenges in an increasingly complex world.
The Accra Reset is a bold framework designed to move beyond outdated development models. It calls for a fundamental shift in how nations collaborate in the post-SDG era, replacing conventional aid structures with more resilient, equitable and responsive systems.
As part of the launch, President Mahama will announce the establishment of a Global Presidential Council, bringing together Heads of State and Government from Africa, Asia, Latin America and beyond. The Council will drive the Reset’s agenda and advocate reforms in global health and development governance.
A High-Level Advisory Panel will also be introduced, comprising leading experts in finance, health, business and innovation. The panel will provide strategic guidance and ensure the framework delivers practical, measurable outcomes.
The initiative comes at a time of growing concern over the effectiveness of global development frameworks. A 2023 UN review revealed that fewer than half of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are on track, with critical areas such as global health, inequality and fiscal stability facing significant setbacks.
“The era of development-as-usual is over,” the initiative declares, urging a complete rethink of international cooperation.
The Reset will begin with a strong focus on the health sector, which has been especially vulnerable to global shocks and systemic weaknesses. It builds on the outcomes of the Africa Health Sovereignty Summit held in Accra in August 2025, and promotes agile, coalition-driven approaches to deliver real-world impact.
The launch is expected to draw world leaders, heads of multilateral institutions, business innovators, philanthropic organisations and civil society representatives from across Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean and other regions.
In a statement, Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, underscored the significance of the initiative, describing it as a timely and transformative step towards reengineering global cooperation for a more resilient future.
