GTEC shuts down IDTM weekend PhD, MPhil programmes

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has withdrawn the accreditation of three postgraduate programmes at the Institute of Development and Technology Management (IDTM) in Cape Coast, citing breaches in the approved mode of delivery.

In a letter signed by its Director-General, Prof Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, GTEC explained that IDTM was running its PhD, MPhil and MA programmes in Development Studies as weekend courses, even though the Commission had only accredited them for regular weekday delivery.

The Commission emphasised that accredited programmes cannot be repackaged and offered in alternative formats, such as weekend or sandwich, without prior approval.

GTEC revoked the accreditation of the affected programmes and instructed the institute to withdraw all admission letters issued under the unauthorised weekend arrangement.

The Commission also directed IDTM to cease all fresh admissions into the PhD in Development Studies, provide documentary evidence of compliance and prepare a comprehensive teach-out plan to safeguard the academic progress of students already enrolled.

The teach-out plan, which must be submitted by 17 October 2025, will be supervised by the University of Cape Coast (UCC) and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

Both universities have further been ordered to terminate any collaborative admission arrangements with IDTM with immediate effect.

GTEC warned that failure by the institute to comply with these directives would attract regulatory sanctions.

The Commission, however, noted that IDTM has the option to reapply for fresh accreditation if it wishes to run the programmes in a weekend format in the future.
