TEWU to strike Sept 20
The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU), under the Trades Union Congress (TUC), has announced an indefinite nationwide strike set to begin on Friday, 20 September.
The industrial action will affect non-teaching staff across Ghana’s technical and public universities, the Ghana Library Authority, and the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB).
A statement issued by the union, signed by its General Secretary King James Azortibah, said the decision follows months of unproductive dialogue with government over unresolved conditions of service.
TEWU accused the authorities of dragging their feet despite repeated engagements and formal procedures.
“Members are frustrated. We have exercised patience and restraint, but our concerns continue to be ignored,” the statement noted.
The union warned that any attempt to intimidate striking members would be considered an unfair labour practice.
TEWU had earlier served official notice of the strike on Monday, 8 September, citing persistent delays in finalising and signing key agreements.
With no progress made, the union says it has no choice but to take action.
