CEO involvement in staff bonding boosts loyalty — HR Expert

Human Resource professional Melvyn Mawuli Essiel has stressed the importance of top executives, particularly CEOs, actively participating in workplace bonding activities.

In Ghana, cultural dynamics play an added role. Hierarchical respect for authority often creates emotional distance between staff and management.

When leaders deliberately bridge that gap through bonding activities such as attending staff events, celebrating employee milestones or joining recreational activities like football matches, it fosters admiration and strengthens loyalty.

Speaking on Business Breakfast on Zed 101.9FM, Mr Essiel explained that leadership involvement sends a powerful message to staff and creates an emotional connection between employees and the company.

“The CEO should be part of the bonding process. The big man should be able to even steer the conversation with HR, suggesting football matches or quarterly staff celebrations.

“When leaders personally wish employees happy birthday or join in activities, it makes staff feel special,” he said.

Mr Essiel noted that in Ghanaian culture, employees often hold their bosses in high regard, sometimes with a sense of distance.

However, when leaders humble themselves to engage directly with their teams, it fosters respect and admiration.

He added that workplace bonding is not just about activities but about building emotional attachment.

“That’s why when some people leave companies, they cry. They have bonded with their superiors, colleagues and even the security staff. The farewell gifts and emotions show how impactful that connection has been,” Mr Essiel explained.

He therefore advised CEOs and top managers to take bonding seriously, emphasising that leadership involvement can transform workplace relationships and boost loyalty and productivity.
