Tax compliance vital for development — GRA urges public

The Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Anthony Kwasi Sarpong, has called on Ghanaians to prioritise tax compliance, emphasising its vital role in funding national development.
Speaking to the media during the 2025 Oguaa Fetu Afahye in Cape Coast, Mr Sarpong said the GRA is intensifying public sensitisation to highlight the importance of taxes in driving sustainable growth.
The festival, celebrated under the theme “Innovate to Elevate: Harnessing the Creative Economy for Sustainable Growth”, also provided a platform for the GRA to support flood victims in the Central Region.
As part of its corporate social responsibility, the Authority donated GHS100,000 to the Central Regional NADMO and the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly to assist those affected by recent floods that destroyed homes and properties.
“GRA is responsible for revenue mobilisation, but we also see ourselves as partners in national development. As we enjoy this festival, we must remember that our nation is built on the taxes we pay.
“We urge everyone, whether dining at restaurants, staying in hotels, or shopping, to always demand a VAT invoice. That simple action ensures your contribution to revenue mobilisation and national development,” Mr Sarpong noted.
He further disclosed that the Authority has launched a radio campaign on the modified taxation programme, which aims to bring small businesses operating outside the formal tax net into compliance.
Mr Sarpong tressed that broadening the tax base remains critical to reducing Ghana’s reliance on external borrowing and ensuring sustainable development.
