Conservative activist Charlie Kirk killed at Utah University
Charlie Kirk, a prominent conservative activist and close ally of U.S. President Donald Trump, was shot dead on Wednesday during a speaking event at Utah Valley University (UVU).
He was 31 years old.
The incident occurred just 20 minutes into Kirk’s appearance, part of his nationwide ‘American Comeback Tour.’ Video footage shows Kirk engaging with students before a single gunshot rang out.
He clutched his neck and collapsed, sending panic through the crowd of more than 3,000 attendees. His wife and children were present at the event.
Authorities confirmed that the fatal shot was fired from a distance, possibly from the roof or an upper floor of UVU’s Losee Centre. Six officers were providing security, alongside Kirk’s private team, but no other injuries were reported.
A bolt-action rifle believed to have been used in the attack was recovered in nearby woods. Investigators discovered three unfired rounds of ammunition engraved with phrases linked to transgender and antifascist ideology, though officials have not yet confirmed a motive.
Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason said the suspected gunman, thought to be of college age, was tracked on campus surveillance footage.
“We followed his movements onto the roof, across to a shooting location, and later off the building into a nearby neighbourhood,” Mason explained. Despite the footage, the shooter remains at large.
The FBI has since released photos of a person of interest and is offering a USD100,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
Reactions Across the U.S.
President Trump ordered flags nationwide to be flown at half-staff until Sunday, calling the shooting a “dark, dark moment for America.”
He announced Kirk would be posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honour.
“This was a heinous assassination of a patriot who devoted his life to debate and to the United States of America,” President Trump said in a statement.
Political figures across the spectrum condemned the attack. Former presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush all called for an end to violence in politics.
Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance personally accompanied Kirk’s remains back to Arizona aboard Air Force Two.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox described the killing as a “political assassination” and pledged full cooperation with federal investigators.
International leaders also reacted. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Kirk “a lion-hearted friend of Israel,” while Brazil’s Eduardo Bolsonaro described him as a victim of “hate and intolerance.”
Kirk rose to prominence as cofounder of Turning Point USA, a conservative youth organisation he launched at 18.
Over the next decade, he became one of the most influential voices in right-wing politics, credited by Trump with mobilising young and minority voters during the 2024 campaign.
Through his popular podcast The Charlie Kirk Show, frequent Fox News appearances, and bestselling books, Kirk built a vast following of more than 5.5 million on social media.
He was widely regarded as the face of the pro-Trump youth movement, known for his outspoken positions on race, gender, immigration, Islam, and gun rights.
Despite criticism of his views, Kirk cultivated a loyal base and was considered a central figure in shaping America’s culture wars.

Utah Valley University has closed its campus until September 14. Officials stress that there is no ongoing threat but urge anyone with information to contact the FBI.
As tributes pour in, the manhunt for Kirk’s killer continues, with federal authorities promising to pursue every lead.
