WASSCE 2025: 14 arrested for exam malpractice

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has arrested at least 14 people across Ghana, including students, teachers and invigilators, for alleged exam malpractice during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE).

The arrests were made at multiple centres, including Yeji Senior High School, Abbott College in Asante Bekwai, and Atwima Kwanwoma Presbyterian SHS, among others.

WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, revealed during a press briefing that the number of suspects continues to grow as investigations widen.

In a particularly serious breach, the Adventist Day Senior High School centre in Kumasi was shut down after several mobile phones were confiscated from candidates.

Those affected have since been relocated to WAEC’s regional office in Kumasi, where they are continuing their exams under tighter supervision.

Mr Kapi also highlighted several disturbing cases.

Two impersonators arrested in Kasoa have been sentenced to six months in prison each, while a third accomplice received an eight-month term.

In Kukurantumi, the proprietor of Christian School and a teacher were apprehended for allegedly running a WhatsApp group to distribute exam questions.

Meanwhile, in Abura Dunkwa, one Ebenazer Fynn was arrested for impersonation and is currently under investigation.

WAEC has pledged to subject all results from implicated centres to rigorous scrutiny before release, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the examination process.
