Mahama Calls for Unity, Accountability in Safeguarding Democracy

President John Dramani Mahama has called on political leaders and those in authority to rise above partisanship, authoritarianism, and impunity, insisting that Ghana’s democracy must be protected at all costs.
He made the remarks on Tuesday, September 2, at the Jubilee House when the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, led a delegation to officially announce the commencement of the 2025 edition of the Democracy Cup.
President Mahama underscored that democracy extends beyond elections, pointing out that accountability, fairness, justice, and inclusion are equally vital. He stressed that strong and independent institutions remain the foundation of every thriving democratic system.
“Democracy is not merely about elections. It is about accountability, inclusion, fairness, and justice. It is about creating a society where every Ghanaian can aspire and achieve regardless of their background,” he stated.
President Mahama further reminded leaders of their responsibility to govern with humility and integrity. “We must resist the temptation of partisanship, authoritarianism, and impunity. Our duty is to place the interest of the people above all else,” he added.
He also highlighted the role of citizens in sustaining democracy, urging Ghanaians to remain vigilant, hold leaders accountable, reject violence, embrace diversity, and defend the freedoms secured through the sacrifices of past generations.
The Democracy Cup, introduced in 2023, is an annual event aimed at promoting national unity, civic responsibility, and the strengthening of democratic values through sports and dialogue.
