Investment Goals Should Guide Decisions

Head of Strategy and Investor Relations at Invest Corp Asset Management, Christabel Okantey, has urged both individuals and institutions to carefully assess their investment goals before committing capital, stressing that investment is not a “one size fits all” decision. Investment decisions are shaped by a combination of personal financial goals, risk appetite, and prevailing market conditions. In Ghana, these choices have become even more critical in recent years due to the volatility in interest rates, inflation, and the broader economic environment following the 2022 sovereign debt crisis.
Speaking on the Business Breakfast Show on Zed 101.9FM, Ms. Okantey highlighted the importance of defining objectives such as risk tolerance, investment horizon, and expected returns before selecting an investment vehicle.
“Before even committing your capital, I always go back to the basics. What are you committing that capital for? What are your investment goals? What is your risk tolerance? Those are the questions that determine the type of investment you should pursue,” she explained.
She noted that investors seeking to preserve the value of their money are better suited for low-risk securities such as Treasury instruments, while those seeking aggressive or long-term growth may consider equities or higher-risk markets with greater return potential.
Ms. Okantey stressed that while market indicators and economic conditions remain important, the investor’s personal or institutional goals should take precedence in guiding decisions.
“Two years ago, when interest rates and yields were very high, many investors shifted into alternative assets like currencies, hedge funds, private equity, and private credit. Those spaces provided opportunities because they were moving almost inversely to the systemic risks in the traditional market,” she stated.
She emphasized that investment decisions should always be tailored.
“Once we know exactly what you want to achieve, then we can recommend the right investment for you,” she noted.
According to Ms. Okantey, the diversity of goals among investors underscores the need for customized strategies that align with both market conditions and personal financial objectives.
