Ghana to Open New Consulate in Massachusetts

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced plans for Ghana to establish a new consulate in Massachusetts, USA, as part of efforts to expand the country’s diplomatic footprint.
The move will increase Ghana’s diplomatic missions in the United States to three, complementing the existing offices in New York and Washington, D.C.
Speaking at the orientation for newly appointed envoys in Accra on Monday, September 1, 2025, Mr. Ablakwa revealed that Ghana currently operates 75 missions worldwide, including 13 high commissions, 48 embassies, and 14 consulates. He noted that President John Dramani Mahama has directed the ministry to broaden its consular network in order to better serve Ghanaians abroad and strengthen international cooperation.
“One of the key outcomes of the President’s visit to Singapore is an agreement to deepen bilateral ties and establish permanent footprints. Next year, we are set to open consulates in Singapore, Dublin in Ireland, and Massachusetts in the USA,” he said.
Mr. Ablakwa explained that the decision addresses long-standing concerns from Ghanaian communities in the United States, who argue that the New York and Washington missions are insufficient to serve the country’s large diaspora population.
“Ghanaians in the US have long raised concerns that New York and Washington cannot continue to represent a 58-state country. President Mahama has therefore approved the opening of a new mission in Massachusetts,” he stressed.
The minister highlighted that the expansion will improve access to consular services, promote trade and investment opportunities, and enhance Ghana’s cultural and diplomatic relations with partner countries.
