Thousands gather to honour late Daddy Lumba

Thousands of Ghanaians gathered at Independence Square on Saturday to mark the one-week observance of the late highlife icon, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba.
The event, which was initially slated for the University of Ghana Stadium, was relocated due to a noise-making ban imposed in the La Traditional Area.
Despite the last-minute venue change, fans, family and dignitaries turned out in large numbers to celebrate the life and legacy of one of Ghana’s most beloved musicians.
Daddy Lumba, who was born on 29 September 1964 in Nsuta in the Ashanti Region, passed away on 26 July 2025 at The Bank Hospital in Cantonments, Accra, after a short illness.
The emotionally charged ceremony was filled with musical tributes, with performers delivering renditions of some of his most memorable hits, including Aben Wo Ha, Sika Asem and Theresa.
The atmosphere reflected both mourning and celebration as attendees reminisced on the cultural impact and musical brilliance of the late legend.
The one-week observance was jointly organised by the Creative Arts Agency and the Fosu family as part of a series of national commemorations honouring Daddy Lumba’s extraordinary contributions to Ghana’s music industry.
Organisers have announced that full funeral arrangements will be held in Kumasi, with further details to be released in the coming days.
