Helicopter crash probe begins

The Ministry of Defence has announced that the board tasked with investigating the August 6 Z-9 military helicopter crash has officially commenced its work.

In a statement issued on Monday, August 25, the Ministry said the board is chaired by the National Security Coordinator, with members drawn from the Ghana Air Force and the Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation and Prevention Bureau of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).

According to the Ministry, “the United States of America is providing advice and assistance to the board through visiting investigators from the U.S. Air Force.”

It revealed that “the board may also invite other relevant experts and institutions, both local and international, to assist with the investigation.”

The Ministry recalled that a preliminary investigation team had been constituted on the day of the crash to gather available evidence to support the work of the main board.

That preliminary team is scheduled to submit its report to the board today, providing a basis for further inquiry.

“The board has been mandated to complete its work within 30 days,” the Ministry emphasised, stressing that the timeline is critical to ensure swift but thorough findings.

The statement assured the public of transparency in the process, noting that “the outcome of the investigation will inform concrete measures to enhance the safety of military aviation in Ghana.”
