Arthur Kohn Backs Black Stars Despite World Cup Omission

Union Berlin defender Arthur Kohn has pledged his support for Ghana’s Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, even though he was left out of the final squad.
Ghana’s 26 man roster was announced on June 1 ahead of their friendly against Wales in Cardiff on June 2. The list included Accra Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, the only player from the Ghana Premier League to make the cut.
Kohn’s absence came as a surprise to many fans and analysts. The defender has been in strong form in the German Bundesliga with Union Berlin and impressed during Ghana’s friendlies against Austria and Germany in March. His performances had raised expectations that he would be part of the squad heading to Canada, Mexico, and the United States for the tournament.
However, his incomplete nationality switch from Germany to Ghana played a key role in his omission. The paperwork delays meant he was not eligible in time for the World Cup squad announcement. The situation sparked frustration within his family, with his uncle publicly criticising the Ghana Football Association for failing to resolve the issue quickly.
Despite the setback, Kohn has remained positive. He stated that he will fully support the Black Stars campaign and hopes the team can make a strong impact at the tournament. His commitment reflects his desire to represent Ghana in the future once the nationality process is completed.
The Black Stars will face a tough group stage, with matches against England, Croatia, and Panama. Head coach Carlos Queiroz has emphasised the importance of experience and balance in his selections, with the squad blending local talent and international players.
Kohn’s omission highlights the challenges Ghana faces in integrating dual nationality players into the team. While the country has benefited from diaspora talent in the past, administrative hurdles continue to affect squad decisions. Analysts say resolving such issues quickly is crucial to ensure Ghana can field its strongest possible team in future competitions. For now, the focus remains on the players selected. Goalkeeper Benjamin Asare’s inclusion has been welcomed as recognition of the Ghana Premier League, while Joseph Ati Zigi of Swiss side St. Gallen and other internationals bring depth to the squad.
