The government is set to introduce performance targets for all Ghanaian ambassadors and diplomats as part of a new policy shift aimed at boosting economic diplomacy and positioning the country as a competitive player on the global stage.
Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, disclosed the initiative at the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD-9), describing it as a landmark development in the nation’s diplomatic practice.
He said the framework, which introduces key performance indicators (KPIs) for the first time in Ghana’s history, will be launched by President John Dramani Mahama on 1st September.
“On the first of September, the President will be launching, for the first time ever, key performance indicators for all ambassadors and diplomats from the Republic of Ghana. This has never happened in our history,” Mr Ablakwa noted.
According to the Minister, the move will shift Ghana’s diplomacy beyond protocol and political engagements to one rooted in concrete economic outcomes.
Diplomats will now be required to actively drive investment, expand trade opportunities, and demonstrate how their efforts directly improve the living standards of Ghanaians.
“The President wants our diplomacy to make an impact. Our diplomacy must lead to improvements in the lives of people,” he emphasised, noting that the new approach would demand greater accountability and results from missions abroad.
Mr Ablakwa explained that under the new policy, ambassadors will be evaluated on their ability to attract investment, strengthen bilateral partnerships, and enhance Ghana’s visibility as a safe and attractive investment destination.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been tasked with ensuring that missions abroad become focal points for promoting the country’s economic interests.
“Diplomacy must promote investment, and diplomacy must create a safe haven for all of those who invest in our country,” he affirmed.
