Fidelity Bank launches free electric vehicle rides in Accra

Fidelity Bank Ghana has rolled out a pioneering initiative to advance sustainable mobility in the country, offering free electric vehicle (EV) rides along one of Accra’s busiest commuting corridors.
The project, which provides complimentary rides from Oyarifa to the Central Business District (CBD), forms part of the bank’s broader agenda to promote clean energy and reduce carbon emissions.
The initiative is being spearheaded under the bank’s sustainability and climate action drive, which seeks to align corporate practices with Ghana’s transition towards greener development.
Speaking to the media, Donatus Kuuzume, Sustainable Finance Products Manager responsible for Partnerships, Sustainability and CSR at Fidelity Bank, explained that the EV rides were designed to serve both practical and educational purposes.
“This project is part of Fidelity Bank’s broader commitment to sustainability and our determination to play a leading role in advancing Ghana’s climate and development agenda,” Mr Kuuzume said.
He stressed that beyond providing a low-carbon alternative to daily commuting, the rides are meant to raise public awareness of the economic and environmental benefits of EVs.
Passengers who took advantage of the free service praised the comfort and efficiency of the vehicles, noting that the initiative has demonstrated how clean energy solutions can be seamlessly integrated into everyday life.
Several commuters expressed hope that more institutions would follow Fidelity’s example to scale up the adoption of renewable energy technologies in transport and other sectors.
The project comes at a time when Ghana is grappling with rising fuel costs, urban pollution and growing concerns about the health impact of traffic congestion in Accra.
Experts argue that electric vehicles can play a critical role in reducing the country’s carbon footprint, but adoption has been slow due to high upfront costs, limited charging infrastructure and low public awareness.
Fidelity Bank believes corporate players have a responsibility to fill this gap by driving innovation and advocacy.
“We want to encourage both individuals and businesses to rethink mobility and make choices that are more sustainable,” Mr Kuuzume added.
As part of its sustainability strategy, Fidelity Bank has pledged to support projects that promote renewable energy, financial inclusion and social impact.
The bank reiterated that the EV pilot will not be a one-off effort but part of a series of green initiatives designed to inspire behavioural change and promote Ghana’s environmental agenda.
