Diet must change with age — Dietitian

Dietitian Consultant, Andrew Kwablah, has emphasised the importance of adjusting eating habits as people age, warning that the body’s nutritional needs change significantly over time.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), adults over the age of 60 are more vulnerable to non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular conditions and certain cancers. Many of these are closely linked to diet and lifestyle choices.

Speaking on Zed Wellness Link on ZED 101.9FM, Mr Kwablah explained that metabolic and physiological changes occur throughout life, from childhood through adulthood and into old age.

These shifts, he said, make it necessary for individuals to adapt their diets rather than rely on the same foods they consumed in their youth.

“We can’t keep eating the same food and expect to have the same outcomes. As we age, our bodies undergo several changes, and our diets must reflect those changes,” Mr Kwablah noted.

He pointed out that individuals around the age of 60 face different health challenges compared to younger people, with many battling cholesterol issues, diabetes or prostate-related conditions.

Insulin activity, he added, also tends to decline with age, making dietary adjustments even more critical.

“At 60, your health needs are different from someone in their twenties. This is where fibre becomes very important, and nutrition goals have to shift to support overall health,” he said.

Mr Kwablah advised older adults to seek professional guidance from dietitians to help plan meals that align with their changing nutritional requirements.

“Your diet at 60 should be personalised to your health condition. Working with a dietitian ensures that you get the right balance of nutrients to support healthy ageing,” he stressed.
