$3.5m fertiliser plant commissioned at Shai Hills to boost agricultural productivity

The government has commissioned a USD3.5 million fertiliser manufacturing plant at Shai Hills, a project expected to significantly boost Ghana’s agricultural productivity and support the nation’s export ambitions.
The plant, established by Invess Agriculture Ghana Ltd in partnership with the Nitron Group, the world’s second-largest trader in agricultural fertilisers, was officially opened at a recent ceremony attended by dignitaries from the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, as well as executives of Invess.
Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, commended Invess for its contributions to fertiliser supply since its inception in 2017.
She highlighted the company’s role in delivering 50,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser to COCOBOD during the 2023/2024 cocoa season, a move that helped maintain Ghana’s competitiveness in the global cocoa market.
“With this new state-of-the-art facility, Invess is stepping boldly into the future. The plant has the capacity to produce 385,000 metric tonnes of granular fertiliser and five million litres of liquid fertiliser annually, all operating under a multi-shift, 24-hour economy model that aligns perfectly with His Excellency’s policy direction to boost national productivity through round-the-clock economic activity,” she said.
The Minister added that the plant’s advanced blending technology enables the production of 20 distinct formulations, approved by COCOBOD, and enriched with vital micronutrients such as boron, zinc, molybdenum, sulphur and calcium.
These formulations, she explained, are designed to double farmers’ yields sustainably, from one metric tonne per hectare to as much as 2.5 metric tonnes.
Chief Executive Officer of Invess Agriculture Ghana Ltd, Patrick Ohene-Djan, said the commissioning marks only the beginning of the company’s expansion drive.
He revealed that feasibility studies and planning approval have already been completed for a five-million-litre liquid fertiliser plant to complement the existing granular facility.
“While celebrating current achievements, we are preparing for the future. We will continue to develop eco-friendly fertiliser solutions under our brands like INCOFERT, designed to improve crop quality, yield and resilience. These innovations will serve crops such as cocoa, maize, rice, tomatoes, cashew, pepper and banana. Our goal is to provide customised solutions, competitive pricing and expert technical support while promoting environmental sustainability,” the Chief Executive Officer of Invess Agriculture Ghana stated.
He added that the new facilities will ensure farmers gain access to innovative fertiliser blends that improve soil health, strengthen cocoa flowers and reduce crop loss, while supporting Ghana’s agricultural growth and export targets.
