Police foil bank robbery in Winneba
The Anti-Armed Robbery Response Unit (AARU) of the Ghana Police Service has foiled an attempted robbery at the MRB Rural Bank in Winneba, Central Region.
According to the police, the incident occurred around 1 a.m. on Friday, 15 August 2025, when the bank’s alarm system was triggered, drawing the attention of a patrol team on duty.
The patrol team, sensing unusual activity, rushed to the scene to investigate.
“On reaching the location, they were met with sporadic gunshots from the robbers. After a brief exchange of fire, the robbery gang bolted, leaving behind one pump-action gun and other implements,” the statement noted.
The AARU team retrieved the abandoned weapon along with an empty cartridge at the scene. Preliminary investigations suggest that about five armed men were behind the attempted robbery.
The robbers reportedly tried to break into the bank’s vault, but the swift response of the patrol team thwarted their plans.
Police further revealed that the gang’s mode of operation closely resembles that of a group linked to earlier rural bank robberies.
“The modus operandi of this robbery gang is similar to that of the gang in the earlier rural bank robberies reported, suggesting that it is the same gang responsible,” the statement added.
Intelligence gathered so far indicates that the suspects may be hiding in Kumasi. The police confirmed that a team of AARU surveillance officers has been deployed to the city in pursuit of the gang.
