Importers, Exporters call for united front to reform port system

By: Rebecca Okine

The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana has called on all trading and logistics groups to unite in shaping the future of port operations, saying a collective voice will strengthen policy influence and accelerate reforms for fairer and more efficient systems.

Executive Secretary of the Association, Samson Asaki Awingobit, said a united industry front would amplify negotiating power and help address persistent challenges at the country’s ports.

He urged collaboration among key associations, including the Ghana Union of Traders Association, the Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders, the Traders Advocacy Group and the Food and Beverages Association of Ghana.

“Our fight is for the principle that when anyone walks into a shipping line or a port terminal, they are respected. This applies to truck owners, drivers, mates and agents alike,” Mr Awingobit said.

According to him, a coordinated approach will compel shipping lines, terminal operators and other service providers to resolve long-standing grievances, improve service delivery and ensure fairness in port operations.

The Association stressed that the transformation of Ghana’s ports into a more business-friendly and efficient trade gateway depends on collaboration rather than competition among industry players.
