MTN Ghana share price rises, lifts stock market

MTN Ghana (MTNGH) shares have posted a strong performance in early August, breaking out of a month-long price range to close at GHS3.93 on 8 August, up from GHS3.54 at the start of the month.

The rally has been a major driver of gains on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE), pushing the Composite Index to 51.1 per cent, ahead of the Financial Index’s 43.18 per cent.

For much of July, MTNGH traded in a narrow band around GHS3.50, with modest daily fluctuations reflecting a period of consolidation.

Investor activity during this phase remained cautious, as price movements alternated between slight losses and minor gains.

Momentum returned in the final week of July when trading volumes surged sharply. On 31 July, more than 46 million MTNGH shares changed hands, valued at approximately GHS163 million.

The heightened activity was accompanied by a price jump of 20 pesewas, from GHS3.35 to GHS3.55, signalling renewed investor appetite.

The bullish trend continued into August, with the stock reaching GHS3.95 on 8 August before closing slightly lower at GHS3.93.

This marks an increase of about 11 per cent from the dominant GHS3.54 trading level of the previous month.

The telecommunications giant’s performance has played a central role in the recent upturn of the GSE Composite Index, which has outpaced the Financial Index in recent weeks.

Analysts attribute the gains to renewed confidence in the sector, supported by signs of improvement in Ghana’s broader economic outlook.

With MTNGH’s share price approaching the GHS4.00 mark, market watchers suggest the current momentum could be sustained, cementing its position as one of the top-performing stocks on the exchange this season.
