By: Praisebell Rosemond Larbi

The Asante Kingdom is in mourning following the death of the Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, at the age of 91.

The Oyoko Royal Family formally communicated the news to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, during an emergency meeting of the Asanteman Traditional Council on Monday, 11 August 2025.

Born Nana Ama Konadu, the late Asantehemaa was the biological sister of the current Asantehene and the 14th Queen Mother of the Ashanti Kingdom. She ascended to the revered position in 2017, following the passing of her mother and predecessor, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II.

Over her eight-year reign, Nana Konadu Yiadom III was celebrated for her unwavering loyalty, wise counsel and dedication to preserving Asante traditions.

She played an instrumental role in guiding Asanteman, offering steadfast support to the reign of her brother, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Her presence at the Manhyia Palace was widely regarded as a symbol of unity and stability, not only within the royal household but also across the broader Asante Kingdom. Elders and subjects alike remember her as a custodian of culture whose leadership and influence helped reinforce the identity and dignity of Asanteman.

Although official details remain limited, family sources indicate that Nana Konadu Yiadom III passed peacefully in the early hours of 7 August 2025.

Her death marks the end of an era and leaves a significant void in the traditional leadership of the kingdom.

The Manhyia Palace is expected to make a formal public announcement and provide details of funeral arrangements once all customary rites and protocols associated with the passing of a royal figure have been completed.

These rites, steeped in centuries of tradition, must be meticulously observed before any public ceremony is held.
