Omane Boamah, Murtala Mohammed killed in military helicopter crash

A tragic military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, August 6, has reportedly claimed the lives of several high-ranking government officials.

Among the deceased are the Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.

Also confirmed dead are Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate; and Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The crew members on board the ill-fated flight were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Initial reports indicate that the officials were aboard a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter en route to Obuasi when the aircraft went off radar.

Emergency response teams quickly moved to the crash site. Graphic images and video footage show the charred remains of several victims.

However, authorities have not yet released an official list of the deceased or injured.

In a brief statement, the Ghana Armed Forces confirmed that the helicopter lost contact shortly after takeoff and that efforts are underway to locate and assess the wreckage.

The cause of the crash remains unknown.
