By Praisebell Rosemond Larbi

The Minister for the Interior and Member of Parliament for Asawase, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has strongly condemned the gruesome killing of Naa Abdul-Malik Azenbe, the Kusasi Chief of the Ashanti Region and Kaadi Divisional Area Chief of the Binduri District in the Upper East Region.

Describing the act as “heinous” and deeply troubling, the Interior Minister expressed sorrow and outrage over the incident in a public statement posted on his official Facebook page.

He also extended condolences to the bereaved family, the Kusasi community in the Ashanti Region, and the wider traditional leadership of the Kusaug Traditional Area.

“This heinous act is not only an attack on a revered traditional authority but also a grievous wound to the peace and security we all cherish,” the Minister said.

The killing, which has shocked traditional circles and communities in both the Ashanti Region and the north, has raised concerns about the safety of traditional leaders and the potential for instability stemming from unresolved chieftaincy disputes or targeted violence.

While details surrounding the murder remain scarce, Interior Minister Mohammed-Mubarak assured the public that security agencies have launched a full-scale investigation and are working tirelessly to apprehend those responsible.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting citizens and maintaining national peace.

“We remain resolute in protecting every citizen. Our security agencies will pursue the perpetrators and ensure they face the full rigors of the law,” he stated.

The Minister also appealed for calm, especially within his Asawase constituency and other affected areas. He urged residents to support ongoing investigations by cooperating with the police and providing any credible information that could lead to arrests.

“Let us all stand together to ensure that justice is served and that peace continues to prevail in our beloved constituency and nation,” he urged.

Naa Abdul-Malik Azenbe was widely respected within the Kusasi community and served as a key traditional figure bridging the Ashanti Region and his home district in the Upper East. His death, described by community members as a tragic loss, has triggered an outpouring of grief across both regions.

The Minister’s statement included a prayer for the late chief, asking for divine comfort for the family and the larger Kusaug community during this difficult time.

“May Allah grant the late Chief eternal rest and strengthen his family and community during this difficult time,” he wrote.

The police have not yet released updates on arrests or leads. The Interior Ministry has pledged to keep the public updated on the progress of the investigation, while traditional leaders across the country have begun issuing their own calls for peace and unity in the wake of the tragedy.
