DKB apologizes to MTN Ghana over data theft claims
Popular Ghanaian comedian Derick Kobina Bonney, known in showbiz as DKB, has publicly apologized to telecommunications giant MTN Ghana after previously accusing the company of stealing his data.
In a now-deleted video shared on X on July 19, 2025, DKB expressed frustration over what he described as unusually fast data depletion.
He claimed that a 214GB data bundle he had purchased disappeared in just two weeks, which he found suspicious compared to his previous 92GB bundles that lasted longer.
However, in a follow-up video posted on July 22, the comedian retracted his earlier claims after MTN Ghana reached out to explain the situation.
“They got in touch and went line for line about my consumption over six months, and I’ve gotten to know what is secretly consuming my data,” DKB said.
He admitted that the company does not steal customer data and thanked MTN for clarifying the matter.
According to DKB, the excessive data usage was caused by certain applications and background settings on his phone consuming data without his knowledge.
He shared that watching YouTube videos in high resolution, such as 1080p, 2K, or 4K, automatic uploads to Google Photos, casting phone screens to other devices, and automatic app updates running in the background are common but often overlooked activities that contribute to high data consumption.
