Stock market gains, T-bills in demand

Ghana’s stock market began the week with measured optimism, recording modest gains on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) Composite Index, even as trading activity slowed significantly.
The session reflected a market taking a breather after weeks of strong performance.
The GSE Composite Index rose by 10.61 points to close at 6,435.51, marking a 0.17 percent daily gain. This small increase adds to a strong year-to-date performance, with the index now up 31.65 percent in 2025.
Financial stocks, which have largely driven this year’s rally, remained unchanged. The GSE Financial Stocks Index closed flat at 3,428.97. Despite the pause, the index has surged 44.03 percent since the start of the year, making it the best-performing segment on the exchange.
However, trading activity slowed. Just 275,496 shares exchanged hands, with total market turnover at GHS 1.84 million, well below recent averages. Still, market capitalization held steady at GHS 139.70 billion, preserving the value of investor holdings.
In contrast, the fixed income market showed stronger momentum. Total trades reached GHS 544.5 million, up 13.2 percent from the previous session. Treasury bills stood out, with volumes rising over 153 percent to GHS 143.3 million.
Analysts say this suggests a growing investor preference for safer short-term government securities.
While equity market activity has eased, analysts note that investor sentiment remains cautiously optimistic, as participants reassess their positions in response to macroeconomic changes and global market signals.
