Fuel levy to take effect July 16

The GHS1.00 per liter fuel levy introduced by the government is set to take effect tomorrow, July 16, 2025, sparking fears of a nationwide increase in transport fares and fresh agitation from stakeholders.
The levy, according to government officials, is designed to generate funds to help restore financial stability in the country’s power sector, which continues to grapple with significant debt and infrastructure challenges.
Initially scheduled for implementation on July 1, the levy was postponed to allow for further stakeholder consultations. However, despite these engagements, strong opposition persists from various quarters, including the minority in Parliament, the petroleum industry, and transport unions.
Meanwhile, civil society organizations and labor unions are calling for a broader national dialogue on Ghana’s fuel pricing structure, with some advocating for a review of the various taxes and levies embedded in pump prices.
