Assembly Members start receiving allowances

By Praisebell Rosemond Larbi

The Government has officially started disbursing monthly allowances to Assembly Members across the country in fulfillment of a long-standing commitment to strengthen local governance and promote national development.

The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim, confirmed that as of Monday, July 14, 2025, the Ministry of Finance had released over GHS23 million to cover payments for April and May 2025.

Each Assembly Member receives a monthly allowance of GHS1,300, a milestone policy aimed at improving the financial standing and effectiveness of local representatives.

“This payment is part of our efforts to strengthen the decentralization agenda and recognize the essential contributions of Assembly Members to grassroots development and participatory governance,” Mr. Ibrahim said.

Officials at the Ministry of Local Government said the allowance initiative aligns with the government’s broader goal of empowering Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to fulfill their mandates effectively.

The move follows years of advocacy by Assembly Members and local governance stakeholders who have called for regular financial support to help them perform their duties more efficiently.

Assembly Members represent the interests of their communities at the district level, facilitate development planning, and ensure transparency and accountability in managing local resources.

The allowances are expected to be institutionalized and included in future national budgets as part of ongoing decentralization reforms aimed at deepening democratic governance and boosting local development.

Government sources say efforts are ongoing to ensure timely and consistent payments, making the role of Assembly Members more attractive and impactful.
