A tragic accident at Adanwomaso in the Kwabre East Municipality of the Ashanti Region has claimed the lives of two police officers and one civilian, with two others in critical condition, following a head-on collision between a bullion van and a Kia truck.
The accident, which occurred on the newly reconstructed road stretch between Bonwire and Adanwomaso, involved a speeding bullion van and a Kia truck loaded with bags of cement.
Eyewitnesses say the crash was devastating, leaving both vehicles mangled beyond recognition.
Efo Mawusi, a resident who witnessed the collision, recounted that the bullion van veered into the lane of the oncoming Kia truck, causing a violent crash that left no time for evasive action.
“The bullion van was speeding. It suddenly swerved into the lane of the Kia truck. The impact was loud and destructive. When we got there, the van was crushed and the truck was overturned,” he said.
According to him, the two police officers onboard the bullion van died on the spot. A third occupant, believed to be a civilian escort, also perished.
Only the driver of the bullion van survived the crash, though he sustained severe injuries. The Kia truck driver is also in critical condition and was rushed to the hospital alongside the bullion van driver.
Residents and emergency teams quickly responded to the scene, working with difficulty to extract victims from the wreckage. The bodies of the deceased were conveyed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) morgue, while the injured are receiving treatment at the facility’s emergency ward.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command has confirmed the incident, and the identities of the officers involved are yet to be officially disclosed pending notification of next of kin.
Meanwhile, the Kwabre East Municipal Assembly has expressed concern over the rising rate of road crashes and pledged to support investigations into the cause of the accident.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims. This is a painful reminder of the importance of road safety and responsible driving,” a municipal spokesperson told the media.
The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has also been notified and is expected to conduct an independent assessment of the accident scene.
