Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park management celebrates return of Founder’s Day

The management of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park has lauded the government’s decision to reinstate Founder’s Day to its original date, September 21, in honor of Ghana’s first President and leading independence figure, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

The restoration, officially enacted by an Executive Instrument issued by President John Dramani Mahama on June 26, 2025, overturns a 2019 policy introduced by the Akufo-Addo administration, which had moved the holiday to August 4.

In a press release signed by its Acting Executive Director, Dr. Collins Rawlings Nunyonameh, the Park described the decision as a “victory for truth and historical justice.” Dr. Nunyonameh emphasized that while others played supporting roles in Ghana’s journey to independence, Dr. Nkrumah’s contribution remains unmatched.

“This decision is not only a victory for truth and historical justice, but a reaffirmation of the indisputable legacy of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah as the true founder of Ghana,” the statement said.

Referencing a tribute from former Guinean President Sékou Touré in 1972, the Park noted: “Those who attempted to humiliate him only succeeded in glorifying him.”

The Park called on the government, Parliament, and the Constitutional Review Committee to take further steps by legally entrenching the September 21 date, protecting it from future political changes.

“We now call on the Government, Parliament, and the Constitutional Review Committee to take steps to entrench Founder’s Day in law, to safeguard it from future political revisionism and historical distortions,” the statement urged.

The Park extended an invitation to all Ghanaians and visitors to explore the site in Accra, which is dedicated to preserving the life and legacy of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

The statement also applauded the government’s commitment to correcting historical narratives and reaffirming Ghana’s founding heritage.
