24-hour markets set to boost local growth, empower women entrepreneurs

The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has unveiled plans to pilot 24‑hour market centers across selected districts as part of the government’s efforts to stimulate local economic growth and empower women.

Delivering the keynote address at a private sector forum in Bolgatanga, Sector Minister Ahmed Ibrahim said the initiative is a key component of the Mahama administration’s flagship 24‑Hour Economy policy.

“We are creating the policy environment, providing security infrastructure, and working with Regional Coordinating Councils and MMDAs to pilot 24‑hour market centers with provision for the Women’s Development Bank,” Mr. Ibrahim stated.

He explained that the concept includes shift systems for factories, extended market hours, and improved access to public services during the night.

“The 24‑Hour Economy is a reality and should be a game‑changer,” the minister emphasized, urging local government heads to support its implementation.

The markets, he noted, will be strategically located in city hubs and powered by solar energy to enable night trading. They will also incorporate support services such as pharmacies, police and fire stations, health posts, and fuel stations to ensure uninterrupted business activity.

“This is what President Mahama is bringing,” he said, highlighting the government’s vision for inclusive and sustainable economic activity.

The forum titled ‘Enhancing Social Cohesion and Social Contract Through Empowerment of Women and Youth in Three Northern Regions of Ghana,’ was organized by the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

During the event, the NDPC launched an investment strategy toolkit to guide eight districts in identifying economic strengths and attracting private investment.

The strategy also includes a series of regional forums to connect local authorities and women’s groups with investors and philanthropic organizations, aiming to boost domestic revenue mobilization.
