Gov’t to hire 60,000 education workers in 2025

The Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu has announced that the government plans to recruit 60,000 personnel into the education sector this year.
This includes 50,000 teachers and 10,000 non-teaching staff.
The announcement, made in Parliament on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, comes amid growing concerns over teacher unemployment and recent agitation within the sector.
Mr. Iddrisu assured lawmakers that funding for the large-scale recruitment has been captured in the 2025 national budget.
“This House is assured that adequate provision was made for this in the 2025 budget,” Mr. Iddrisu stated.
His remarks followed Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin’s call for an investigation into the alleged mistreatment of teachers who picketed at the Ghana Education Service (GES).
The minister dismissed claims of manhandling and instead emphasized the government’s commitment to resolving outstanding clearance and posting issues.
Citing the case of the picketing teachers, Mr. Iddrisu explained that clearance had been granted in May 2024 for them to begin work in August.
However, due to administrative delays, they started in September, which caused the clearance to expire at the end of the year.
“This morning, I met with Bafour Eric, and I will soon share the details with the public. We discussed the matter, and he indicated to me that clearance was received in May. They were expected to start work in August but began in September,” the Minister added.
