University of Ghana resumes COVID-19 safety measures as cases rise

The University of Ghana has officially reinstated its COVID-19 safety protocols following a resurgence of cases on campus and in nearby communities.
In a public notice released by the University Health Services Directorate, university authorities urged all students, staff, and visitors to remain alert and strictly comply with preventive measures to help curb the spread of the virus.
“As part of our response to the rising number of infections, we are reactivating the University’s COVID-19 safety measures. We call on the university community to take these protocols seriously to protect their health and that of others,” the notice stated.
Among the reinstated measures are the mandatory wearing of face masks in all enclosed spaces, such as lecture halls and offices. Community members are also reminded to wash their hands regularly or use alcohol-based hand sanitizers, especially before entering shared facilities. Physical distancing of at least one meter must be maintained in classrooms, offices, and communal areas, while gatherings of large groups are to be avoided altogether.
To support these efforts, all academic and administrative buildings are encouraged to improve ventilation by keeping windows and doors open where possible.
In addition to these preventive steps, health screenings and triage systems have been reintroduced at the university’s medical facilities to help identify and manage suspected cases early.
Students and staff experiencing flu-like symptoms, including fever; cough; sore throat or body aches, are strongly advised to remain at home and seek prompt medical attention.
The university has assured the community that healthcare personnel are fully prepared to assist and that the situation is being closely monitored.
“The University Hospital remains fully operational and ready to support anyone affected. We will continue to monitor developments closely and provide regular updates as necessary,” the statement added.
While there is no indication yet of new restrictions beyond the university, public health officials are encouraging similar precautions in other institutions and public spaces.
Members of the university community are urged to remain calm, cooperate fully with health directives, and report any suspected COVID-19 symptoms or exposure to the appropriate health authorities.
For medical assistance or more information, individuals are encouraged to contact the University Hospital’s COVID-19 response team.
