National Theatre to stage Wole Soyinka’s epic play this August
The National Theatre of Ghana has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with production companies Image Bureau and April Communications to stage Wole Soyinka’s iconic play, ‘Death and the King’s Horseman,’ scheduled to open in August 2025.
The formal agreement was signed on Monday, June 23, at the National Theatre premises, marking the beginning of what is expected to be one of the year’s most anticipated theatrical events.
The play will run on August 23 and 24, with encore performances on August 30 and 31, all staged at the National Theatre in Accra.
The collaboration is part of the National Theatre’s ongoing efforts to promote and develop Ghana’s performing arts industry.
Speaking at the event, Acting Executive Director of the National Theatre, Mr. Herbert Malm, said the production aligns with the Theatre’s core mandate and called on theater lovers and the general public to support the show.
He emphasized that since its inception in 1992, the National Theatre has remained committed to nurturing and showcasing Ghanaian talent.
Mr. Malm further noted that resident groups within the theater are joining hands to ensure the success of this major production.
Mr. George Quaye, CEO of Image Bureau, also expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, highlighting the significance and complexity of staging ‘Death and the King’s Horseman. He acknowledged the play’s thematic depth and technical demands but reaffirmed confidence in the team’s capacity and the Theatre’s support.
