Unpaid teachers picket at GES HQ over missing IDs, back pay

A group of newly trained teachers from the 2022 batch of Colleges of Education graduates gathered at the Ghana Education Service (GES) headquarters in Accra, demanding the release of their staff identification numbers and months of unpaid salaries.
The protestors, visibly upset and armed with placards, claimed they had earlier submitted a formal letter to the GES outlining their grievances but had yet to receive any acknowledgment or response.
After waiting at the premises for over two hours without engagement from GES officials, tensions mounted.
Police were later deployed to the scene and reportedly issued a three-minute ultimatum for the teachers to disperse. Their refusal to leave led to a forceful removal by the officers. Despite the confrontation, the teachers say they are not backing down.
“We’ll be here overnight so that by morning, we can go to the Finance Ministry and then proceed to Parliament,” said one of the protest leaders, signaling plans to escalate their actions.
The group is set to present a petition to the Ministry of Finance today, Tuesday, June 24, 2025, before continuing their demonstration at Parliament. Their goal is to attract the attention of Members of Parliament and bring urgency to their demands.
“When MPs arrive, we’ll let them know what the government is putting us through. All we ask is for our staff IDs and the money owed to us,” the protest leader added.
The teachers say they have been left in financial limbo for months, unable to access salaries or formal employment benefits due to the lack of staff IDs. Some say they are struggling to afford basic living expenses while continuing to report to their assigned schools.
They insist their protest will continue until their concerns are addressed by the relevant authorities.
Meanwhile, the GES has yet to issue an official response regarding the demonstration.
