U.S. Student visas resume with tough new social media checks

The U.S. State Department has resumed scheduling appointments for student and exchange visas after halting new applications at the end of May.

However, this resumption comes with enhanced screening: all applicants for F, M, and J visas are now required to make their social media accounts public to support more stringent vetting.

A diplomatic cable issued on June 18 mandates that consular officers conduct comprehensive online reviews for “any indications of hostility toward the citizens, culture, government, institutions, or founding principles of the United States.”

This encompasses not only traditional platforms like Facebook and X, but the applicant’s entire digital footprint, including data from search engines and third-party databases.

Applicants who refuse to make their social media profiles public may face additional scrutiny under the assumption that they are attempting to conceal content. The cable emphasizes the need to flag posts that reflect support for designated terrorist organizations, antisemitic violence, or intentions to engage in hostile political activities.

These measures are part of a broader State Department strategy targeting applicants perceived as threats to U.S. national security, with particular focus on foreign students at elite universities.

While interviews have resumed, the directive warns that fewer slots may be available due to increased vetting requirements.

Priority will be given to certain exchange programs, including medical trainees and students at institutions with fewer than 15 percent international enrollment.

This initiative reflects a broader effort by the U.S. administration to couple rigorous immigration screening with foreign policy objectives.

Critics argue it risks suppressing free speech and discouraging international academic talent, while supporters say it enhances national security and safeguards American values.
