NIA to begin partial salary arrears payment for staff

The National Identification Authority (NIA) will begin paying 20 percent of outstanding salary arrears to its staff starting January 2025.

The move is part of a phased plan to address persistent concerns over staff welfare and improve morale across the Authority’s nationwide operations.

The announcement was made to the media on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, by the Head of Corporate Affairs at the NIA, Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, who confirmed that the payment has been officially approved by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance.

According to Mr. Darlas, the initial funds required for the partial settlement have been captured in the 2025 national budget, paving the way for disbursement in the coming weeks.

“This is a step in the right direction. The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, working with the Ministry of Finance, has given clearance for 20 percent of the arrears to be paid. We are hopeful that the rest will follow soon,” he stated.

The arrears date back several months and have been a major source of agitation among NIA staff, particularly field officers and administrative personnel. There have been several calls by employee unions and internal stakeholders for government intervention to resolve the matter.

Mr. Darlas reassured staff that the NIA remains committed to securing additional funding to clear the remaining 80 percent of outstanding arrears and that efforts are ongoing to engage with the appropriate authorities to ensure subsequent payments are made in full.

“We are aware of the challenges our staff face, especially those on the ground, and management is doing everything possible to improve the situation,” he said.

He added that the Authority considers staff motivation and welfare critical to the successful implementation of its mandate, including the ongoing registration and issuance of Ghana Cards.

The NIA has, in recent years, come under scrutiny over logistical challenges, staff dissatisfaction, and delays in card issuance. However, government officials have consistently assured the public of steps being taken to improve institutional performance and service delivery.

The phased salary settlement is expected to ease tensions within the institution and help restore confidence as the NIA continues its nationwide identity registration drive.
