ECG cuts power to Ghana Water Limited over ¢1bn debt

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has disconnected Ghana Water Limited (GWL) from the national grid due to mounting indebtedness of nearly GHS1 billion.
The disconnection is part of ECG’s nationwide revenue mobilization exercise, which began on Monday, June 16, 2025, as the utility moves to collect outstanding payments from debtor institutions and customers.
ECG officials explained that GWL’s growing arrears, which have been outstanding for several months, are affecting ECG’s ability to efficiently provide power and maintain service delivery across the country.
The disconnection sends a strong signal from the power distributor that it will no longer compromise its financial stability by allowing large debtor institutions to ignore their financial obligations.
While GWL’s disconnection may temporarily affect its operations and water delivery, ECG stressed that it had made numerous attempts to reach an agreement with GWL’s management on a realistic repayment plan, but with little progress.
This move forms a key part of the ongoing revenue drive, which targets both state-owned enterprises and private entities with significant outstanding bills. The exercise is expected to enable ECG to improve its cash flow, reduce financial stress, and provide reliable power to its growing customer base.
ECG’s revenue mobilization team is currently following up with other debtor organizations and companies in a bid to recover payments due. The utility maintains that honoring financial obligations is crucial for its ability to invest in its distribution network and provide a stable and reliable power supply across the country.
