The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has called on the newly sworn-in boards of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) and Ho Teaching Hospital to make dignity and compassion the hallmark of health care delivery in the country.
He made the call during their inauguration ceremony held on Monday, June 16, 2025, at the Ministry of Health in Accra. The ceremony saw the induction of members for both boards, a crucial step in strengthening oversight, policy direction, and service delivery in the health sector.
Mr. Akandoh stressed that delivering health care is not just a technical service but a moral and human enterprise. “Every patient who walks through your doors is a human being, a mother, a father, a son, or a daughter, someone who is vulnerable and in need of care. We must treat them with dignity, fairness, compassion, and professionalism at all times,” the Minister said.
He called on the boards to collaborate closely with hospital management teams to identify bottlenecks, implement appropriate solutions, and improve health care delivery across all facilities under their oversight. This, he explained, would enable health care institutions to respond more effectively to the growing health needs of Ghanaians and foster greater confidence in the health care system.
“The boards must be vigilant and accountable in their oversight responsibilities, putting the best interests of the people first in their decision-making process. This means honoring standards of fairness, equity, and justice, while always upholding the highest professional ethics and discipline in the delivery of care,” Mr. Akandoh stressed.
He further encouraged the boards to be forward-thinking and innovative, noting that strengthening health care delivery is a collective enterprise. “It’s not just about policy; it’s about making sure that every patient feels valued, cared for, and supported from the moment they arrive until they are discharged. This is a collective responsibility from policymakers, boards, hospital administrators, doctors, nurses, and all health care workers.”
The Health Minister also reiterated the government’s ongoing efforts to improve health care delivery through policy interventions, capacity building, and financial investment. He called on the boards to align their strategic plans with these initiatives to enable a more resilient and adaptable health care system for all Ghanaians.
