Water Supply Disrupted in Tema, Accra After Pipeline Burst
Residents and businesses in the Tema Metropolis and several parts of Accra are facing a temporary disruption in water supply following a major burst on a 42-inch transmission pipeline, the Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced.
According to the utility provider, the incident occurred along a critical transmission line that serves the eastern corridor of Accra, leading to widespread interruptions in water distribution. The pipeline is a key component of the water supply system for Tema and surrounding communities, making the impact of the burst significant for households, commercial establishments and public institutions.
GWL said the disruption affects the entire Tema Metropolis and large sections of Accra, including Ashaiman, Gbetsele, Akatamanso, Klagon, Lashibi, Baatsonaa, Spintex, parts of East Legon, Nungua, Teshie and nearby communities. Customers in these areas have been advised to expect interruptions until repair works are fully completed.
In a statement, the company explained that engineers and technical teams were immediately mobilised after the fault was detected. The teams have since been working continuously to repair the damaged transmission main and restore normal water supply to affected areas. “Due to the size of the transmission main and the complexity of the repair, the restoration process requires careful handling to ensure safety, durability and efficiency,” the statement said. GWL noted that repairing a large-diameter pipeline involves technical challenges and must be done cautiously to prevent further damage or future breakdowns.
The company assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to expedite the repair works. Management, according to the statement, is providing the required technical and logistical support to ensure the repairs are completed as quickly as possible without compromising quality and safety standards.
As part of interim arrangements, Ghana Water Limited has advised essential service providers, particularly hospitals and schools within the affected areas, to contact the company for assistance during the period of disruption. This is to help reduce the impact of the interruption on critical services and vulnerable populations.
GWL further assured customers that water supply will be restored immediately after the repair works are completed. The company also pledged to keep the public informed by providing regular updates as the situation develops and appealed to affected residents and businesses to remain patient while efforts are made to resolve the problem.
